Overview
It's the kind of care that isn't really covered by any medical or disability income insurance, or even to any great extent by Medicare.
It is needed when someone becomes unable to care for themselves on their own and requires help doing the "everyday things" we all take for granted, like dressing, eating and bathing. That can happen as the result of a stroke, paralyzing accident or serious illness. Just as it sounds, long-term care is about needing care for a lengthy period of time, either in your home or in a facility that provides long-term care services.
You can cover yourself, your spouse, your eligible domestic partner, your parents, parents-in-law, grandparents or grandparents-in-law. There are two types and five levels of coverage from which to choose comprehensive and nursing home care. You also have the opportunity to purchase a non-forfeiture option that may provide a daily benefit even if you discontinue your participation in the plan after three (3) years.
Enrollment
New employees who enroll for long-term care coverage within ninety (90) days of hire do not need to provide proof of good health to MetLife. However, all employees can enroll in, increase, or cancel long-term care coverage at any time. There is no need to wait for open enrollment.
- Employees can enroll during special enrollment with guaranteed coverage (no proof of good health required).
